					Explanation
What is a post tooth or post crown?
A post tooth, also known as a post crown, is a special restoration for teeth that are severely damaged or worn. A small metal or ceramic post is inserted into the root of the tooth. This post serves as an anchor for the crown made over it. The crown itself can be made of various materials such as ceramic, zirconium oxide or metal alloys. The combination of post and crown stabilizes the weakened tooth and allows it to regain its full function.
Pin teeth offer several advantages:
- Preservation of the natural tooth: Instead of removing the tooth, it can be preserved with the post crown.
- Stability: The post anchors the crown firmly in the tooth stump and gives the tooth the necessary stability.
- Aesthetics: The color of the crown can be matched to the natural teeth and looks very natural.
- Longevity: With good care, post teeth last for many years.

Application
When is a post tooth useful?
A post crown is a sensible solution in various situations. Firstly, it can be used after root canal treatment if there is little healthy tooth substance left due to the treatment or previous caries. In such cases, the post anchored in the root canal serves as a stabilizing anchor for the crown fabricated over it.
A restoration with a post tooth is also often advisable for severely worn, broken or discolored teeth. Due to the massive damage to the substance, a normal crown alone would no longer be anchored with sufficient stability. The post in the root canal provides the necessary anchorage.
Posterior restorations can also be considered as a replacement for old, defective crowns. If the original crown is damaged or leaking, it can be replaced with a new post tooth

Functionality
How do post teeth work?
Pin teeth function by means of a special anchoring technique in the tooth. The process of a post tooth restoration takes place in several consecutive steps. First, the affected tooth is prepared by removing any existing caries and, if necessary, root canal treatment is carried out. The dentist then inserts the small metal or ceramic post into the root of the tooth and fixes it there with a special cement.
In the next step, the dentist takes an impression, which is then used to make the crown for the post tooth. Until the final crown is completed, the tooth is temporarily restored with a temporary crown. As soon as the final crown is made from ceramic, zirconium oxide or a metal alloy, the dentist attaches it to the inserted post and the post tooth is complete.
The following 3 requirements must be met for a successful post restoration:
- Sufficient root substance for anchoring the pin
- Healthy, inflammation-free gums
- Sufficient space for the crown without affecting the neighboring teeth

Financing
How much does a post tooth cost?
The cost of a post tooth varies depending on the material, dentist and region. On average, the costs are between 500 and 1,500 euros. Some health insurance companies cover part of the costs, others do not. You can obtain an exact cost breakdown from the dental practice.
Like any dental treatment, post restorations are also associated with certain risks. For example, the post inserted into the root may cause a root fracture and damage the tooth. In addition, the crown on top may become loose or even fracture over time. Inflammation of the surrounding gums or the root skin, which can form under the crown, cannot be ruled out either. In rare cases, allergic reactions to the materials used for post crowns, such as metal or plastic alloys, can also occur. However, if the treatment is carried out professionally by the dentist and the patient maintains good oral hygiene at home, these risks can be classified as low overall.

Implant or post tooth?
Both implants and post teeth are used to replace a tooth. However, implants are inserted into the jawbone, while post teeth use the natural root. Implants are the better solution if the tooth is completely missing. If the root is still present, a post tooth is often the more cost-effective alternative.
The treatment time for a post tooth usually extends over several weeks.1st appointment: Preparation of the tooth, root canal treatment if necessary-> 2-3 weeks break for healing2nd appointment: insertion of the post, impression taken-> 1-2 weeks waiting time for crown fabrication3rd appointment: insertion of the finished crown

Controversies
Pin tooth under discussion
There is a controversial debate among experts about the benefits of post teeth. Some experts see post teeth as a temporary solution and prefer implants in the long term. Others consider post teeth to be an equivalent alternative to implants if the indication is right.
Research is continuously focused on the optimization of post teeth. One focus is on the development of new materials such as fiber-reinforced plastics for the posts, which promise greater stability and longevity. Research is also being carried out into improved adhesion properties between the post, the tooth structure and the crown cemented over it in order to increase the durability of the restoration. Long-term results and complication rates of post restorations are continuously analyzed in order to identify and eliminate weak points. Last but not least, digitalization is driving research forward - digital workflow processes should lead to more precise and accurately fitting post restorations.
