Bone augmentation for your jaw
So that dental implants and dentures have the best possible hold
Dental implants promote a radiant smile: these artificial tooth roots can be used to securely attach dentures. Sometimes it is necessary to build up the bone in your jaw beforehand in order to anchor dental implants properly. The smilin'' dental practice in Rheinfelden has just as much experience with bone augmentation on the jaw as it does with implants in general. We have compiled some interesting facts about jaw augmentation for you on this page.

Dental implants and jawbone augmentation
Dental implants are clearly the best solution for fixing dental prostheses such as a dental bridge, a denture or an artificial crown. In order for an implant to be inserted well and grow firmly into the jaw, your jawbone must have a minimum thickness at the intended location. This depends on both the bone density of the jaw and the thickness of the remaining bone layer. There are various meaningful examination methods for measuring bone thickness prior to jaw bone augmentation. Our low-stress digital X-ray machine is a particular help here.
As a rule of thumb, there must be sufficient bone so that the implant length is not less than 8 to 10 millimeters. If this is not the case, bone augmentation of the jaw is usually necessary.
Bone loss, which makes bone augmentation on the jaw necessary (technical term: bone augmentation), can have various causes:

Causes of bone loss
-
After tooth loss, the jawbone automatically recedes because there is no chewing pressure on the jaw at that point.
-
The permanent friction of a denture can further increase natural bone loss.
-
The inflammatory dental disease periodontitis also weakens the jawbone in advanced stages.
After tooth loss, bone loss is initially very rapid: in the first year, the bone recedes by half a millimeter to one millimeter, depending on the region of the jaw, and then by around 0.1 to 0.4 millimeters per year. Continued over many years or even decades, the bone layer of the jaw can become almost paper-thin. It is best to start bone augmentation on the jaw as early as possible so that it doesn't get that far in the first place.

Measures for bone augmentation
There are various options for bone augmentation on the jaw:
Lower jaw
Jaw bone augmentation is often indispensable on the lower jaw. Since the pressure of a denture usually has a greater effect on the lower jaw than on the upper jaw, bone loss also progresses faster here on average. Special bone replacement material is inserted at the site where the implant is to be placed to build up the jaw. It gradually grows together with the jawbone. As a rule, the required bone thickness can be achieved in this way.
Upper jaw
If the upper half of the dentition is to be restored with dental implants, bone augmentation of the jaw is often necessary. The cause: For anatomical reasons, the bone cover on the upper jaw is naturally weak. A so-called sinus lift can be used to build up the jawbone. The additional bone substance is inserted under the mucous membrane of the floor of the jaw (technical term: sinus floor).
