Infants are usually infected with the so-called caries bacteria by their mothers or other direct caregivers via spoons, pacifiers or kisses.
The later this initial contact with the caries pathogens occurs, the more resistant the oral cavity is to the bacteria, as the colonization sites are usually already occupied by other, more harmless microorganisms, leaving no room for the caries bacteria. It is therefore particularly important that the contact persons themselves do not have infected decayed teeth.

Saliva tests can provide information
Saliva tests can determine whether the mother, for example, has a high level of these harmful germs in her mouth. Appropriate precautionary measures can be taken. People who are susceptible to tooth decay or have untreated oral diseases should not put their baby's pacifier or feeding utensils in their mouth.
Studies show that the bacterial flora formed by decayed milk teeth can continue in the permanent dentition: Destroyed milk teeth are excellent nesting sites for caries bacteria and thus infect the permanent teeth during eruption. If the milk teeth can be kept healthy, the permanent teeth can develop optimally.
