Which dental treatments are painful?
For many people, procedures such as root canal treatment or apicoectomy trigger fears of a painful treatment to preserve the tooth. For them, a dentist appointment is unpleasant and sometimes even provokes fear. Extensive caries, which also requires drilling in the area of the diseased tooth close to the nerve, was also a potentially painful dental treatment in the past.
Fortunately, since the 19th century, a visit to the dentist has lost much of its horror. At that time, the use of nitrous oxide made it possible for the first time to reduce or even completely prevent pain during the treatment of diseased teeth. The nitrous oxide was followed by ether and chloroform anesthesia. Modern methods of local anesthesia not only ensure painless dental treatment - they are also more efficient and gentler. Pain-free dental treatment also has significantly fewer side effects in the present.

Local anesthesia
Local dental anesthesia is one of the most common procedures to ensure pain-free dental treatment. During infiltration anesthesia, injections are given to locally eliminate the sensation of pain in the tooth, mouth and jaw area. Even complex procedures such as implant placement can then be carried out without any problems.
However, some patients find the pressure in the tissue when the syringes are inserted unpleasant. You may feel discomfort beforehand. At the smilin'' dental practice, local anesthesia is therefore administered without an injection to make the entire treatment even gentler and less painful. The computer-controlled single-tooth anesthesia (STA) we use is a highly modern and very gentle procedure that leaves you feeling practically nothing. Thanks to the microprocessor, the anaesthetic is dosed carefully and precisely, as the DPD (dynamic pressure sensing) technology ensures fine control of the delivery pressure. This means that not only the treatment but also the anesthesia is completely painless.

General anesthesia
Under general anesthesia, you are unaware of the procedure and - in contrast to twilight sleep - no longer perceive any other stimuli. General anesthesia can be particularly useful for complex dental operations, dental implants, the extraction of wisdom teeth or medical interventions on the jaw. This option is particularly important for anxious patients: In addition to pain-free dental treatment, general anaesthesia helps this target group to minimize psychological stress and anxiety in advance.
