Sinus Lift – Bone Augmentation for Upper Jaw Implants

What Is a Sinus Lift & How Does It Work?

A sinus lift (also called sinus augmentation) is a surgical procedure that increases the bone volume in the area of the maxillary sinus. During the treatment, the sinus membrane is gently lifted and bone material is placed underneath to increase the height of the jawbone. This creates sufficient stability for the safe placement of dental implants.

When Is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

  • When there is insufficient residual bone height in the upper jaw.

  • After long-term tooth loss that has led to bone resorption.

  • When conventional implant placement isn’t possible without additional bone augmentation.

Methods & Techniques

Depending on your individual situation, different techniques may be used:

  • Internal (closed) sinus lift: a minimally invasive technique suitable for minor bone deficiencies.

  • External (open) sinus lift: performed through a small lateral bone window, typically used when more bone volume is needed.

  • Bone graft materials: use of autologous bone, bone substitutes or synthetic materials, depending on the case.

Procedure at smilin’’

  1. Diagnostics & imaging (e.g. CT) to assess the bone structure

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Thanks to local anaesthesia, the procedure is generally pain-free.

Typically several months, until the graft material has fully integrated and stabilised.

In many cases, the implant is placed only after the bone has fully healed.

Possible risks include membrane injuries, infections or insufficient integration, but with careful planning and precise technique, complications are rare.
